"ward 3"

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

While my care was acceptable, The nurse caring for me were second to none. i did however observe some bad practise while on ward 3. The ward appeared to be very understaffed. Some nurses were very helpful and caring while others were very off hand especially to the elderly patients. An older lady was in considerable pain and distress, She had no family or visitors in the week i was there and i feel she would have benefitted greatly from a friendly ear and a few kind words, things i expected from a nurse. Instead passing comments were spoken in a very uncaring manner she was made to wait a long time for help and her tears went unacknowleged. The agency staff (wearing lilac tops) on an evening were next to useless. I couldnt understand them and from the six bed unit not one of our requests was answered over several nights. Lots of the nurses has a standard response i'll come back.......One in particular never spoke, never made eye contact and she chewed gum noisely while doing my obs. On a positive note the ward was clean and the food was okay.

In the interim period, may I wish you a speedy recovery and compliments of the season. Kind regards Lorraine B Lambert Chief Executive
