"It started badly when we arrived at maternity and..."

It started badly when we arrived at maternity and the person on reception rudely said, loud enough to hear, "oh no, here are some more". We checked in at 6.10 pm when my wife went into labour and it was not until 7.05 pm that we were finally led out of the reception area and into a room - unfortunately this was just a small cupboard and while it had a bed it was not at all suitable for how it was being sued. At 7.15pm we had a cursory visit from the midwife who complained that she had three other patients on the go and that if we urgently needed something to use the red button. We were not in a maternity room, we were in a cupboard and, as a result, there was no pain relief available. We asked multiple times for pain relief but none was forthcoming. Funnily enough, despite the fact they were busy there appears to be an awful lot of nurses gathered around having a chat throughout.... Finally we were moved into a room where pain relief was available. The midwife we eventually got was lovely but the whole place is far far too busy, they do not have enough rooms or staff available and to be met like that was a disgrace.

Response from St George's Healthcare NHS Trust

We are very disappointed to read your description of your visit to the maternity unit. If you would like to talk to the service about your experience and if you have not done so already, then please contact the PAL Service at pals@stgeorges.nhs.uk or on 020 8725 2453 where staff will see what they can do to help. We are unsure where you have been seen as the description of the room and the colour of the call button are different to what is provided on our site. If we had the opportunity to discuss your experience it would help us make improvements.

We are sorry for the delay in responding as the previous response appears to have been lost as it was written on 27th December 2013.
