"Praise for the whole Neurosciences Department!"

About: York Hospital

I started coming to Neurosciences in 2010 - saw a consultant neurologist initially. Wonderful experience. He really listened to me where others had not, he believed me, he didn't treat me like I was annoying or wasting his time. My symptoms are many and varied, and they don't form enough of a pattern to make any firm diagnosis so I have felt very let down on previous occasions by doctors' seeming-reluctance to take me seriously. He took the time to review my entire medical file, looking at everything that has been 'off' with my development since I was born. He treated me with compassion. Seeing the consultant was very satisfying and he was able to get me further help, leading to... Occupational Therapist (still in the Neurology Department), who went above and beyond the call of duty to assist me with my quality of life. She came round to my flat repeatedly so she could really get an insight into how I was living. Nobody else had done that and so people thought I was ok because I have a high verbal IQ. She sent letters in all directions and when the neuropsychology team wouldn't take me (they only take people who have been diagnosed with something) she got hold of a battery of neuropsych tests and administered them herself, which gave some really useful results as to whiuch functions are impaired. Crucially, she got me referred to adult social services and now I have the supportive social care I need in order to function. Because of her, my mental health is light-years better than it was. I used to have horrible depressions and I have not had a major depressive episode now for 2 years. And there's more - the Neurophysiotherapist, assisted me greatly with my muscular weakness, giving me great exercises to do. She looked at me as a whole person - previous physio visits in the main physio department were tricky because they looked at me as a knee or a leg or a spine, rather than a full body. My problems are all-over issues and I needed to be looked at as an entire body, which she did. The room where she practiced was comfortable, clean and very spacious. Excellent equipment. I'm pretty much guessing at the last time I went to the department as I really can't remember. I saw the staff there well over 30 times over a period of 2(ish) years.
