"Hospital bugs, infections and catheters"

About: Alexandra Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I have an elderly neighbour who was having bladder problems. He went into Hospital for a catheter to be fitted. After being discharged he went home. Within a few days he became very ill and was rushed into the same Hospital. He had contracted a virrilant bug, which was evident in his water works. He was okay up up to his hospital visit. We presume the infection occurred while catheter was fitted. In any case it was contracted whilst he was in the Hospital. He ended upon life support and it was touch and go wether he was going to pull through.

He was on life support for about a week. I remember asking a nurse about the drugs they were giving him. She said pointing to a bag of liquid hanging up,'Thats five thousand pounds worth and he is on his second one. The Hospital can only give this treatment to five people a year,' she said. But I feel he should not have got infected in the first place.
