"Very good and quick treatment-positively surprised"

About: Newham General Hospital

I went to the A&E yesterday afternoon/evening with chest pains. I was looking for a walk-in centre but at reception was immediately registered. I was very surprised because within half an hour I already had an initial assessment. In the past I used A&E at Whipps Cross hospital and it was minimum 2-3h wait (even when I arrived with aching appendix), so this was very quick. The first nurse was ok, not horrie but also not overly nice but thorough and professional. She advised for an ECG and this was done again in about 30minutes followed by a second one 20minutes later. After that I awaited to see the doctor-maybe half an hour. This was the biggest surprise-the doctor was very patient and super nice. She actually listened to me and suggested anxiety attacks as a cause just after one look at my face-I did suspect those but the chest pains were consistent for time so wasn't sure if it wasn't a heart condition. But the doctor treated me with a lot of respect and didn't patronise even though she could have told me to go as it wasn't an emergency after all. I'd like to thank the doctor not sure of the surname. She is superb and I hope she never looses that attitude to patients. She gave me advice needed and how to follow up. Overall I was very impressed by the short waiting times, staff friendliness and the doctors competence. 2hours in and out -for an a&e in busy east london area I think is very efficient. The only thing was that in the waiting room there was a homeless person whose smell was actually revolting and anyone can just walk into the unit so I guess he was using it for a shelter. As much as I symphatize with the person looking for a warm place to sleep, the smell was unbearable and I think at least one security guy would do no harm.
