I was a patient on Gillies ward at the Nottingham City hospital for a mastectomy.
The best things about my experience was the relaxed atmosphere which allowed me to be myself and the kindness and care in every aspect of my treatment. My stay in hospital proved to me what an effort is made in the care given to every patient and the limitless effort being made to keep wards clean. The fitting of a bra and replacement breast did so much for the morale. I observed in ladies who had had mastectomies a marked difference in attitude once they were wearing a bra which disguised the loss of a breast. They seemed ready to face the world, and so did I.
I cannot praise the NHS enough. Thank you to all Gillies ward staff, the porters, the chef, the lovely ladies who delivered our meals and, of course, those who carried out my operation.
