About: Burnley General Hospital

I received a referral from my GP to visit ward 6 to investigate a severe pain in my left eye. The optometrist who's name I wasn't given did not refer to my medical records. Her findings were I had blepharitis and dry eyes which have been in my medical records for some time, which she would have noted had she bothered to check, I then spent half an hour in pharmacy only to find the drops prescribed were also already prescribed by the hospital optometrist.. I am still no wiser but I believe the pain was caused by a tear duct infection as I have had a discharge of pus from that area. I would of thought it was regular practise to refer to a patients medical records. Regards Robert Robinson

Dear Mr Robertson As the Business Manager for the Ophthalmology directorate can I first of all thank you for your feedback regarding your recent experience with our department. We appreciate all feedback received whether positive or otherwise and use it as an opportunity to learn about the things we get right or wrong within our service. Although I cannot comment on the specifics of your situation without further detail, the details provided would suggest that you have attended the departments Urgent Clinic at Ward 6 at which you would have seen an Ophthalmology Doctor and not an Optometrist. Should this be the case, I can confirm that the unplanned nature of the urgent clinic would prevent the Doctor from having access to your case notes within the consultation however the details of your attendance would be added to the case notes once available to the clinic the following day. May I apologise if this was questioned at the time and not explained appropriately to you during the consultation. I hope this was able to address the issue for you, however I would be happy to investigate further in to the specific circumstances should you wish for us to do so following contact either over the telephone or in writing with the Trust’s Complaints and Litigations team via telephone on 01254 733700
