Last year I found out my son had died at 34 weeks. And was told to go back to the hospital in 2 days for induction and that the midwife would be expecting me. When I turned up they thought that I was someone else. They didn’t have the right information and took a while to get it. The induction was started at 9 in the morning. When the contractions really got going I was given an epidural. About 6 hours later, a midwife came to check on me and said I was 9 cm dilated. Then an hour later, she told me I was fully dilated and the baby’s head had come down. I told her I didn’t feel like I needed to push and she said I wouldn’t as I had an epidural. I said I wanted to wait till the head was nearly out before I started pushing, which she said was fine. All through this time I had chronic diarrhoea, which nobody offered me anything for - I had to beg for it at 2 the next morning. When another midwife checked me at 11 that night, she found I was only 1cm dilated and the induction had to be started off again. The epidural had worn off and, for the last 8or9 hours of a 27 hour labour, I had to be given a top up of anaesthetic every hour. I cannot believe the midwife could make such mistakes. I complained to the hospital, who investigated and I also complained to the health care commission, who said because I want the staff in question disciplined that they couldn’t help me. What are they there for then?
