"Unacceptable treatment for the elderly"

About: North Middlesex Hospital

I took my wife (74) to A&E suspecting food poisoning. She received a couple of intravenous injections and 2 x bags of drip. She was discharged as her neausea disappeared. However, the neausea symptoms returned the following day and after careful deliberation, I called an ambulance once again and had to be taken to A&E North Mid again. This time, I learnt that no record of her history were kept. So, she got the same treatment but before taking her home this time, I asked if the cause of her neausea was established. I was referred to the 'medical team' who assured me that the tablets they were going to give me on this occasion would work. On the issue of what kind of bacteria was causing her the problem, they did not have and answer. Today, the day following our second visit, the symptoms have returned in spite of the tablets. We find ourselves completely at sea, and do not quite know whom to turn to, as even our GP makes herself unavailable by choosing to be away when we want her services (on Friday, we're told she would be away until Monday). Who do we go to, under these circumstances? A&E of course is ruled out as they arn't able to deal with it effectively. What kind of service are we offered by our Coalition Government, after making our NI-contributions over more than 40-years?

I am the service manager of the A&E department and have read your comments regarding your mixed experiences at North Mid. Patients are always given the opportunity to discuss their treatment and medication with an A&E doctor and it is important that patients do raise questions when they are unsure of a treatment plan. Feedback is welcomed and please email: mark.channell@nhs.net.
