"Excellent treatment"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital

Dear all, my name is Gary Clements and, having run 117 times over 5km with a free-to-enter running organisation called parkrun, mostly at Bedfont Lakes near Heathrow, I was visiting Bournemouth and decided to join in your local parkrun as a visitor on Saturday 4th January 2014. Not knowing the course, which is in Kings Park and near the Football Ground, and with the weather being somewhat inclement, I started off fairly steadily on the loop course, and remember passing the cemetery a second time (about 9:20am). But from that moment on, my memory is a blank until 10:50am when I noticed the clock above the running track's cafe counter, and two volunteers are on mobile phones contacting NHS Direct about my health, and the hotel where I was staying, and a male volunteer supplying me with a cup of tea. From what one kind volunteer told me later, I was somewhat confused and disorientated, and even now, I don't remember half the run, or finishing the course (had to check Bournemouth parkrun's internet results page), or how anyone discovered where I was staying, who my wife and friends were, or even how they found my car and retrieved some dry clothes from it Apart from the treatment given me by the parkrun volunteers, I can only heap utmost praise on the staff of Bournemouth Hospital's A&E department. After blood tests, an ECG, a chest X-ray, and the most thorough of examinations by a young doctor to test for whether I had had a mini-stroke, the diagnosis (after consultation with a senior physician) is that I suffered "global amnesia", which more often affects people in my age group 40-80, especially during and after exertion. Having received such wonderful treatment from Bournemouth Hospital, my wife and I would like to contribute a small sum of money to the staff of this department for their enjoyment, perhaps towards Bournemouth's A&E social club.

Dear Gary I am sorry to about the unfortunate incident that took place during your recent visit to Bournemouth. It sounds like the event organisers were very well prepared for all possibilities and that you were well looked after during the early stages. It is gratifying to hear your high praise of our Emergency Department and the swift diagnosis and treatment you were given.
