"My recent stay for day surgery"

About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital

I was recently in hospital for an operation to remove a tumour from my face. Despite being in my 40s I had never been into hospital for an operation before. I attended the pre op check a few weeks before admission and the staff where very friendly, however they did do all the checks without really saying what was happening and why.....I assume that a lot of it becomes automatic for them but it left me a little bewildered. On the day of the op I arrived with my overnight bag, they done all the check and the anaesthetist, was obviously not happy that I had eaten breakfast at 7, despite my letter saying I cold eat up to 7.30, this made me feel a little uncomfortable and although he didn't saying anything directly to me, I knew this was the case. I was already nervous and this just made me more jittery. I came round from the anaesthetic and was eventually moved to a ward. Again the staff where friendly enough, but as previous went about their check with little explanation, No-one even told me where I would find the toilets! The food was passable, and everyone was friendly and pleasant, Everything ran smoothly and I was discharged the following day. My only criticism would be to make sure people know what you are doing and why.....for example:- You all may know what a cannula is and its purpose......all us customers don't ......

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are concerned that our communication could have been much better. So I have forwarded your comments to pre assessment. There is no mention of the ward you were on but will inform all wards of your comments. We would encourage you to contact our Patient Affairs Office directly on 01582 497 002, or email complaints.officer@ldh.nhs.uk if you would like us to address any of your concerns further.
