My Father arrived at approx 2pm on 2nd Jan via ambulance after GP phone consultation with acute epigastric pain and difficulty breathing. He was seen promptly by the triage nurse and after some tests was left in a wheelchair in the waiting room until a doctor was available. When the Dr shouted him out, I was then expected to pull my Dad in his wheelchair through the dept to the designated bay. I am 6 months pregnant and my Dad is 101kg. On examination by the junior Dr, the consultant was then called in for a second opinion. He didn't introduce himself to either of us and proceeded to discuss my Father with his junior, asking her to get the surgical team down. Nobody had discussed anything about surgery or what it was for. My Dad was spoken about, over his head, by 2 doctors. I questioned the consultant about 'surgery' at which point he then explained that the working diagnosis was a perforated ulcer. Nobody had explained any of this to us. As a senior member of NHS staff myself, I am appalled at the lack of 'patient involvement' in this consultation and find it ignorant and arrogant to talk about a patient, over them without engaging with them. Further more one of the rooms he was treated in was dirty and had rubbish on the floor. I have used this hospital many times before and have nothing but praise for other depts. This experience was less than Satisfactory from this trust.
