"Horrid Orthopaedic Experience"

I am a 21 year old female with Hip Dysplacia. I have attended an number of appointments at the DRI to discuss my hip, but before i could have an anthroscopy i needed an arthrogram, i told my consultant that i have a phobia of needles so he wrote it on my file. In June i went to DRI to have my arthrogram but, i was very upset as the notes must have gotten lost that i hate needles. A radiographer came at me with 2 needles one for the pain (even though im in pain every day due to my hip) and the other needle to administer the dye. The nurse did not speak very good english and did not understand that i was yelling at him telling him to stop. I was very shaken up and only had an MRI instead. On the 19th of August 2013, was the date of the hip arthroscopy. I got to the hospital at 7:30am and was taken into a room to discuss the operation with a nurse and my anaesthetist. The anaesthetist had no idea about my phobia of needles and at first refused to let me use gas instead of the injection. As only children use gas. Eventually he let me use the gas. I was then taken to the anaesthetic room, even then i was questioned as to why i wanted to use gas, as only children use gas. When i woke up from the operation, i was taken to ward 7. As i was coming round from the anaesthetic, i was in alot of pain so i was given morphine and was told that i could have 5ml every 90 minutes. I kept on vomiting though as the drugs did not agree with me, but my pain increased as i was throwing up the drugs. It was a very vicious circle. This continued into the early evening when the night nurse clocked in, however the staff levels decreased from about five or six members of staff including students to one nurse and one student. The student could not administer the drugs but the night nurse refused to give me morphine, so she gave me paracetamol instead! The next day, i was still in alot of pain, but the physiotherapist wanted me to get out of bed and have a go on the crutches. He wanted me to walk as far as i could, but failed to realise that i needed a wheelchair to get back to my bed. Also, the crutches were too big for me as im only 5ft2 and the crutches were rubbing my arms/elbows. The nurses did not read my notes as one came and asked my how i had hurt my leg? And asked if i was drunk when i did it? The second night, had the same awful night nurse who ignored me and was very resilient to give me pain killers. I had no pain killers from 3am to 7:30am as they had 'forgotten' to give me any. I was hysterically crying with pain and phoned my dad, who then phoned the ward sister to inform her. The morning nurses had all walked passed me while i was crying very loudly, some even looked at me but none came and asked me what was wrong. I was only meant to be in for one night but due to the poor staff, i had to stay in for two nights. I have found the whole experience traumatic. I have not been able to write everything i wanted, as i cannot fit it all in.
