"Waste of time and made to feel like scum"

About: St Edmunds Hospital

I was referred to this hospital as I require an urgent knee operation and the N&N University Hospital couldn't fit me in. I'm 25wks pregnant however, my GP feels that I need this op asap as my knee won't take the extra weight and he confirmed all this in the referral letter. It was a 100 mile round trip to this hospital as I was under the impression that this was my Pre-op however, I was pretty much ignored by all and had my appt an hour late even though everyone else seemed to be going in on schedule (I can only assume that this was because they were private patients and I was a lowly NHS referral). Once finally called in to see the consultant he told me that he hadn't even read my referral letter yet and then point blank refused to do the op as I was pregnant. He would have known all this if he'd bothered to read the letter and I could have been saved a journey and considerable embarrassment and disappointment. I explained my situation and how much pain I was in however, this was all disregarded and he told me to sit on the sofa all day and put my feet up until the baby was born. I said that wasn't possible as already had two young children. I was then ushered out and hobbled back to my car in tears as was made to feel like utter garbage and was talked down to by this 'gentleman'. I've complained to my GP who was disgusted by this and is re-referring me elsewhere. Do not use this hospital....!!!

We are very sorry to hear this feedback. It is most unfortunate that this patient did have a wasted journey due to an administrative error. In addition to this, the safety of both mother and child are paramount. Our hospital has no midwifery services on site in case of premature labour being induced by surgery and / or anaesthesia and as a result, we would see this as a risk for a pregnant patient to be operated on.
