"Day case surgery for my son"

About: Macclesfield District General Hospital / Day case unit

(as a parent/guardian),

My 9 year old son had to have oral surgery for a cyst under his tongue as a day case.

We arrived on the ward and were shown to our bed. The nurses were extremely friendly and relaxed. The play specialist Elaine rang us the night before to go through the procedure; and ask if I or my son had any concerns. I had mentioned my son vomits at any signs of pain and blood; this was remembered and acknowledged by her on the day. We were looked after by a Sister called Louise who was very nice to my son.

We were visited by the anaesthetist Dr Rothwell who was very friendly and spoke to my son at all times. We also had a visit from the surgeon Mr Patel who was very professional and friendly.

As my son was extremely frightened, the staff changed the theatre list to allow him to go earlier to alleviate his suffering somewhat. The journey to theatre was led by a friendly porter and the play specialist Elaine, who stayed with me and my son while Dr Rothwell and Dr Wales gave the anaesthetic.

Prior to this, my son was so frightened he started vomiting in the anaesthetic room and crying, and at no time was my son made to feel bad, embarrassed or rushed.

The staff were lovely, patient and caring right the way through and I would definitely recommend this facility to potential parents. Both Dr Rothwell and Mr Patel visited after the op and gave me information as to how things had gone. I appreciated this enormously.

An extremely positive experience at Macclesfield. Thank you. My son has now said he wouldn't be frightened if he had to have another operation...this is fantastic and testament to all the staff involved!
