I fell and hurt a rib just under a week ago - I expected it to be painful for a good month, and know that simple rib fractures are just managed with painkillers and rest (and making sure to keep coughing) - so I didn't bother the hospital with it.
However, over the last few days I'd started having collection of air and swelling and some sharp pains through the rest of my chest - similar to when I've had laparascopic surgery in the past.
So, I went to St James's A&E this morning in case it was something more serious developing. They triaged me quickly in minors, transferred me to majors, saw me, got blood tests, gave me some stronger painkillers, did x-rays and confirmed that there's nothing too serious to worry about - but reassured me that I was right to come in and should come back immediately if it gets any worse. All within 3 hours.
This is the 3rd time I've used St James's A&E (the previous two times I had to be admitted) and they've been absolutely brilliant every time. Not one person who wasn't smiley and reassuring, from nurses to porters to the doctor who sorted me out.
"Everyone was smiley and reassuring at St James's A&E"
