"Cancelled my procedure because no bed available"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I am so upset, I have been waiting months to see a spinal specialist, and when I finally got to see her (she was lovely) I got an appointment for my procedure on the 4th of January. To my shock I just got a phone call to say they are postponing because the hospital has no beds.....

NO beds.... Why does it take so long?

I would like to apologise to you for the recent cancellation of your spinal procedure. The reason for cancellation is that we are currently experiencing a high demand in emergency admissions which are taking priority in the allocation of beds within the hospital. It is essential that we undertake a risk assessment and it would not be safe to allow surgical operations to continue with no beds to allocate patients to postoperatively. I appreciate that this is very frustrating for yourself and other patients as a lot of work is undertaken to enable you to prepare yourself and your family for surgery, and we apologies for this. A member of the scheduling team will contact you within the next 48 hours to reschedule your surgery, and again I apologise for the inconvenience that has been caused. Kind regards Sam Goldberg, General Manager – Surgery, Anaesthesia & Critical Care
