"B6 Russells Hall surgical ward"

About: Russells Hall Hospital

(as a relative),

My Husband was on B6 following a minor operation and has a terrible phobia of anything medical, to the point where he had neglected to come into hospital and ended up having to have surgery to drain a wound that was infected.

On arriving for visiting we found a very friendly male student nurse sat down with my Husband (we did get his name but not sure if we are allowed to say it on this site) explaining exactly what the blood pressure machine was doing and what all the numbers and bleeps meant, he then explained that my husbands "observations" were all very good and there was nothing to be concerned about, explaining how blood pressure changes depending on many factors etc and that pain, time of day, heat, posture, can all play a part, it was like having an informative teaching session, very clear and enjoyable - he said that it was very important we felt involved in the care which had been given and if we had any questions, if he could not answer them he would find someone straight away who could. - excellent care.

We were all very happy to see my husband with a big smile on his face, the student was very intelligent, well spoken and knowledgeable and had a quick sense of humour which my husband, and myself and daughter thought was wonderful.

I think half the battle is understanding what is happening around you and this young man has restored my husbands faith in medicine - when people ask him about his operation, he always mentions the student.

We all agreed it was lovely to see the next generation of student with the right attitude and approach, when we asked one of the Fully fledged nurses about him even they said, "hes a very good student" especially in light of the issues that healthcare has been in the papers for in recent times.

We would certainly recommend this ward, I cannot speak for other wards but the NHS should be proud to have such great staff, as my husband said, all the years he was worried if he had just had one meeting with this lad he wouldnt have to worry.

Thank you all.

Thank you for taking so much time to post your lovely comments about the care your husband received on ward B6. We aim to offer all our patients the very best possible care and it is wonderful to know how well we succeeded during your husband’s visit. It’s heartening to know we restored his faith in medicine and allayed his fears about coming into hospital.

The student nurse you have quoted is absolutely right – involving patients in all aspects of their care, and explaining what is happening and why, is a very important part of giving patients and their families the best experience at our hospital.

We will be very happy to pass your comments onto the team on B6 as part of our ongoing commitment to sharing best practice and improving patient experience.
