"Treatment delayed due to dissent over pre-op..."

About: Watford General Hospital

Anything else?

I initially declined MRSA screening at my out patients appointment due to concerns over my dignity and modesty. The cotton bud was required to be placed intimately on and in my body. This lack of consent was initially dismissed as nonsense by the nurse. Only when I insisted I did not consent to the screening was the matter escalated to others who spent time ignoring my reasons for declining but strongly suggesting and coaxing me to conform. I read the MRSA leaflet in detail and no where did it explain consent within the process. In fact, patient consent appears nowhere in the MRSA screening policies. After a wait of 8 days I was eventually allowed to be treated. The nurses should be more aware of patient choice and the need to consent to all forms of treatment and avoid trivialising patient views.
