When I was a patient several years back on an acute psychiatric ward a kind art therapist invited me to explore all available materials. As a result I discovered the tactile experience of soft pastels which helped me create many bright pictures and aided my recovery. The manager at the time chose to display framed prints of my poppy picture to brighten the ward environment and foyer of the unit. many patients commented since how much pleasure they gained from those poppies.
An incumbent manager, decided to totally redecorate on taking up the post, removing all my pictures eight months ago with no thought to the painter.
When I eventually managed to make contact with the person I was given no explanation for not letting me know that all my pictures had been removed and no apology despite my telling calmly that I felt invalidated by these actions. When I mentioned that it was rather sad that still no patients' work was displayed I was simply told that patients had played a part in choosing decor for the colour of the ward. I wish to make clear that I did not express anger only sadness about these actions.
