"Avoid Sexual Health Service and Intimidating Care"

About: Kingston Hospital

Anything else?

I visited by appointed to review Sexual Health at the Wolverton Centre. I was alarmed to read that I had to register and the registration process required minimum information that had to be provided. This included, along with name and address, my ethnic origin. I had understood the collection of ethnic data was voluntary and not compulsory for NHS care but I was not allowed to decline to answer. This over zealous data collection left me wondering how safe any of the staff understood patient confidentiality and data processing rules. I picked up their leaflet which confirmed the need to provide full registration details including country of birth and ethnicity? Why am I forced to declare my ethnicity from a list - which does not match my own status of ethnicity - simply to receive care? This is not required by other hospital departments or by my GP. They request this data but have an option to decline. I therefore reluctantly provided this information as I wanted an appointment however this left me feeling vulnerable and unwilling to openly discuss sexual health matters with the team I longer trusted to treat me with dignity and respect my preferences and consent choices.
