"Cataract Surgery "

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I can only but praise the care I received from all concerned at the Ophthalmology department at QMC. My first appointment to see Mr Zamon (due to my "young" age and the progressive deterioration) from referral was within 2 months and FOUR months later I have had both cataracts removed. The difference in my vision is truly remarkable.

I particularly wish to acknowledge the nursing staff in the pre-operative assessment clinic, who were extremely thorough and informative about the procedure, so I knew exactly what to expect on the day of surgery and the post operative period.

Mr Kumadhan and Mr Zamon removed the cataracts in April and July respectively and I had the continuity of seeing the former senior member of the surgical team at both my post-operative follow-up appointments. From a patient's perspective the continuity of care and seeing the same members of staff who understands your situation is important and serves in providing reassurance and trust.

My only criticism was the length of time I had to wait in Eye Day Surgery on the second occasion before being taken to Theatre: i.e. 4.5 hours compared to just over 1 hour previously, as the staff in Theatre claimed they were were not aware of my existence. This made it a long day at the hospital. A cup of tea and packet of biscuits was most welcome post-operatively, but where patients have been at the hospital for some hours, providing them with something more substantial (i.e. a packet of sandwiches) would be appreciated. Similarly, there appears to be some time delay from registering at the Eye Clinic reception to the nurse then undertaking the vision test (45 minutes to 1 hour). However, once this had been undertaken, the consultation with the surgeon was within 10 minutes: which was a marked improvement.

All in all my experience has been great and I am truly appreciative of the care I have received from all at QMC with the consequential difference it has made to my sight. THANK YOU
