Anything else?
My husband had his operation on 3 December and responded very well at the start (he was a very fit man (apart from the bc) and had prepared himself well for the op. He was kept in HDU for I day after surgery and was doing very well, he was transferred to ward 9 where he quickly went downhill, to start with he could not rest as a television was on very loud in the bed opposite. Friday I visited and he was a little confused,he told me he could not reach for a drink the previous night as the table was to far away & he could not find the buzzer I looked for it and it was on the floor. At that time he was not to bad ,sore after the op (understandable) At some stage he was given a sandwich? a piece of ham between 2 pieces of dry bread he could not eat it. Saturday 2nd full day on the ward he was a little off and could not eat so was given an energy drink when I rang the following morning I was told he had been sick maybe caused by medication. I went to visit and could not believe how many bowls of really thick green bile he was vomiting 3 or 4 bowls while I was there, every time he took a sip of water he vomited I was informed by a nurse that this was normal. Some time in the early hours a tube had been put in to drain this bile apparently he had a surgical ileus, now I think this should have been picked up sooner by some medical person on that ward (considering the very recent major surgery)Instead my husband ended up back in HDU with pneumonia caused by vomit getting onto his lung. He had 7 days of intravenous antibiotics and his condition improved, HDU team were very good,he managed to eat a couple of meals. He was moved back to ward 9, on a different bay, but had very bad thrush on his lips & mouth and was unable to eat and had difficulty drinking, but nobody seams to take much notice, he was given cornflakes with cold milk but had trouble eating that. I was never so pleased as I was when my husband was discharged. on the 19th Dec, a shadow of himself after losing 2 stone in weight.and hardly able to hold a newspaper. I am slowly getting him to eat and drink again. But I could not recommend this hospital because the after care after such a major operation let everybody down including the good work of the surgical team but the one to suffer most is my poor husband.
