"4 year old has to wait in general a and e area for..."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

Anything else?

Really disappointed in the waiting area of A and E. On a Wednesday night a few weeks ago my son suddenly had trouble breathing he is 4 and had open heart surgery in London as a baby therefore I took no chances and phoned an ambulance. The ambulance arrived and said it was probably croup but they wanted to take my son to medway to get him checked over. On arrival the paediatric area was closed therefore my son had to wait from 1am-4am in the general A and E reception area, between these times there were police in the area trying to calm down a mental health patient who was swearing and threatening to kill himself, drunks etc etc etc should a four year unwell child be seeing this drama? I am disgusted that there is not an area way away from the general a and e for children. I have a friend living in Guildford they have an dedicated A and E for children!! The overall waiting area is cramped and dirty a really unpleasant experience. The kids area should be open at all times and set away from the main A and E this needs to be sorted. It's not acceptable.

Thank you for your feedback. I am extremely sorry to hear you found your waiting experience so distressing and I agree that the waiting room is in need of refurbishment. This work is being carried out in the next few months. We are currently reviewing the under 16 attendances over the 24 hour period to increase the paediatric area cover and opening times. I will pass your comments on to the rest of the team as you and your family should have been offered a more child friendly environment to wait in. Once again, thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. If you wish to discuss the matter further, please do not hesitate to contact me.
