Listening event at Highbury today below is a conversation with staff on Rowan 1:

We struggle with staff sickness and people leaving so we can't give time that we would like to. However, the team works well together.

The main issue we have is the staffing. We get good feedback from patients and verbally we get a lot of feedback from carers or even cards syaing thank you.

We try really hard to do recovery focussed work, but as we struggle with staff levels it's really difficult to organise this. Staff are human at the end of the day and we try to avoid the 'them and us' mentality.

Staffing is something out of the wards control and a lack of staff has made it quite dangerous. If there’s an incident and you are relying on support from other wards, if they’re short staffed too, it’s not safe.

Response from Patrick Crolla, Acting Ward Manager, Rowan 1, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

Hello and thanks for your comments.

The staffing throughout Adult Mental Health Inpatient Services has been recently depleted due to the closures of Mac Close and Dovecote Lane, leading to a freeze in job advertsiements until all at risk positions could be filled. This action has protected jobs within the trust.

We have all worked tremendously hard at covering any shortfalls and staff on the ward have been a credit to the service in their handling of any shortages.

On Rowan 1 all members of the team take personal responsibility for sickness (reporting, managing) and have a keen awareness of the effect it can have in the running of the ward. The entire team are extremely accommodating and pro-actively adapt to changes that need to be made.

The team is now at full establishment after recruiting staff and are entering a period of stability, which is exciting for the team and what can be achieved for patients embarking on a journey to recovery on Rowan 1.
