"Worried that the OT service is being cut"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health (inpatient)

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Posted on behalf of a service user on Redwood 2 (adult mental health ward) at Highbury Hospital:

I’m concerned about the OT service being cut, it was very popular with patients to have structured activities. Staffing levels impact on the ability to provide escorts and for staff to have their breaks.

Overall, I’ve had a positive experience on Redwood 2.

Along with the Head of Involvement (Paul Sanguinazzi), I am responsible for the Trusts two Involvement Centres, and our Volunteering and Befriending Service. I help to report all of the feedback we receive as a Trust to the Board.

Thanks for helping to gather comments at the Highbury Listening event.

All comments gathered at the Listening Event are being shared with the senior management team who oversee Highbury services, and I'm sure they or a responsible manager will respond in more detail shortly.

Dear AmyJayne,

Many thanks for your posting and understandable concerns regarding cuts made to the OT service at Highbury. As your note the occupational therapists at Highbury do an excellent job which is why despite having to make cost savings we have ensured that all wards at Highbury have access to occupational therapists to lead work centered around structured activities. We are currently in the process of appointing 6 whole time equivalent peer support workers ( PSW's) who will support the wards and occupational therapist to ensure structured activities and opportunities for recovery such as escorted leave is readily available for all patients on the ward. PSW's are people who have experience of using mental health services themselves and have been trained to use their experience to support other patients. They will be a great addition to the ward teams.

I am also currently reviewing the staffing ratios on all wards, as you say it is important that staff have time to take well earned breaks as they need to be refreshed to support the patients

I'm glad you had a good experience on Redwood 2 and I will make sure all the staff team and OT's are informed of your posting

Kind Regards
