"Good care of my boyfriend."

About: Whiston Hospital

Anything else?

My boyfriend was attending the hospital as a planned admission for surgery in November to ward 3A. The hospital was very clean and easy to navigate with clear signs and colour codes. He arrived at 8am, Doctors and Nurses immediately assessed and admitted him and he was in surgery at 9am and returned to the ward at 12pm. Very quick, efficient service. He was discharged at 3pm with antibiotics, pain relief, follow up appointment and verbal advice. I was happy with the level of care he received. Relatives waiting room was nice on the ward with a TV and magazines. There is a nice Costa Coffee and WHSmith downstairs too, which helps when you are anxious and waiting for news of a loved one in hospital. 5weeks later he is still receiving regular follow up appointments for a wound check. However, improvements could be made with Nurse communication For example Staff explaining procedures; staff stated they were going to carry out some routine swabs (they did not explain what this was or what it was required for) I had to explain to my boyfriend that it was a routine MRSA test screen, as I am a Nurse myself, I could explain what this was for. Also with, compression stockings, a HCA said 'put them on', once again he wasn't sure what they were required for, so I had to explain. The Nurse and HCA did not ask if my boyfriend had any concerns or worries about the procedure. He was quite anxious and did not know what to expect, I felt that I was reassuring him. Staff should have a more holistic approach to care and could appear more friendly. However, a good overall experience received! Thanks. Source: Registered Nurse.
