"Disappointed"

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital

Anything else?

My dad had an accident with an electric circular saw, on arrival at the hospital the reception staff were lovely and got him straight through for attention. An xray was taken and then the doctor came to speak to us. We were told that the wound was not as bad at it initially looked. There was no break and no damage to tendons or anything important and that it only need a deep surgical clean and stitch but this would be performed at Pinderfields. We were told he would be transferred straight over to Pinderfields to get medical treatment there. After a 4 hour wait for the ambulance to take him to Pinderfields and once he had been seen by the doctor, he was told that he would actually need bigger surgery than Dewsbury told us as he had actually cut half way through his tendon and it could snap at any moment. He was sent home with the wound heavily wrapped and bandaged ready to return for his op the next day at Pinderfields. After surgery to repair the tendon and everything else, he was told that he would have to return to the fracture clinic as he had actually broken the arm too! How, after an xray, did Dewsbury Hospital miss not only the torn tendon but a break? If we had stayed at Dewsbury for the treatment, my dad would have been stitched and bandaged and sent home with a broken arm just waiting for his tendon to snap at any moment. Although the staff were pleasant, I feel that the level of care was not up to scratch and I am very disappointed. Dewsbury is our local hospital and the drive to Pinderfields took us a while in heavy traffic, When the accident happened this would have been a nightmare as my dad was in a lot of pain and and it was very distressing for us both. It would be a shame to see Dewsbury close, but the quality of staff must be improved. I am 6 months pregnant and I am very much doubting whether I now trust Dewsbury hospital with the delivery of my baby.
