"Childrens A&E"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

Anything else?

My son was referred to A&E yesterday (2/12/13) by the GP after having high temps, complaining of stomach pains and not passing urine for nearly 24 hours. On arrival the nurse in assessment was very friendly and assessed him quickly, we then got put in the children's pea pods. The nurses seemed very miserable and not really paining attention. My son had a case of diarrhea and when i asked if they wanted me to provide a sample they stared at each other before nodding their heads. After a two hour wait my son was eventually seen by a doctor that felt his stomach, and said it was a bug. When i asked if she was sure it wasn't an infection anywhere especially his kidneys as he has suffered with them in the past she just looked at me blankly and said "No, it isn't a kidney infection" No urine sample had been requested at this time. We were sent home, no 48hour open access, no discharge summery and just told that the bug was "coming to the end". Through the night my son's temperature was getting higher and by 7:30am it had reached 40.8, ringing 111 they dispatched an ambulance straight away and took us back to the children's A&E. The nurses were very kind, taking his temperature, asking everything about what had happened yesterday and couldn't do enough to keep my child happy. We were then seen by the same doctor as the night before who asked "What has brought you back this morning? You were only discharged last night?" I explained I wanted a water sample taken and after she took the time to examine my son properly (something that was not done 12 hours prior on our first visit" She diagnosed him with tonsillitis, the doctor then asked if I still wanted his urine tested even though she had already found an infection and when I said yes, she carried on to explain that it is very unlikely he would have a UTI at the same time as tonsillitis. We were discharged after checking the urine and happy that it was just tonsillitis that he had and sent on our way, with 48hour open access and a discharge form, something we were not given the day before. Extremely unhappy with how he was handled especially how he has some slight medical problems which was explained several times to both doctors and nurses, I feel if the time was taken to assess my son properly the first time then we would not have needed to waste more NHS money on an ambulance as he would already of had the antibiotics that was needed.
