"My reality check"

About: Doncaster Royal Infirmary / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was a recovering patient on ward 20 after major surgery. I had a pretty rough time for a few days afterwards and cannot commend enough the level of care I received from the nursing staff. One particular nurse was particularly empathetic, so much so her support when all my dignity had left me and I felt like a physical and emotional wreck will never be forgotten.

A few weeks later I saw the same nurse taking a cigarette break at gate 5 near the main hostpital entrance at DRI. Before my experience I am ashamed to say I may have tutted at a member of the medical profession smoking next to a hostpital.

Not now! I now have first-hand experience of what a fantastic job nurses do and it has taught me never to be so judgemental again.
