"A & E admission and follow up Gyny Review"

About: Yeovil District Hospital

Anything else?

After having a major Gyny op at the end of October 2013 I was worried that something was not right the night after returning home. Op date was on the Monday and this was the Thursday evening so I was still in the very early stages of recovery and on full pain relief every 3 hours. I firstly rang the out of hours GP who told me to go down to A & E at Yeovil if I was really concerned, of which I did. My husband drove me down at aprox 10.00pm. We were seen reasonably promptly and I was in A & E and seen by one of the female doctors who had seen me the day after my op. After examining me and not being happy she said she wanted me to stay in so that the consultant could see me the next day which was fine. She asked if I wanted any pain relief then and I said I was ok at that moment in time. I was told a bed would be allocated for me very shortly and that I would be up in a ward. Well that was the last I heard for some 1 1/2 to 2 hours. They simply pull the curtain and leave you there to fester! Not so much as a peak through the curtain to ask if I was ok, did I need a drink of water, was I now in pain bearing in mind I was recovering from major surgery 3 days prior to this. I was left with a thin hospital blanket, no pillow and a hard bench which was totally up-right which I could not put down. I shouldn't have been trying to move anything anyway as I was told not too do anything remotely strenous for 6 weeks. So there I am waiting and waiting pain beginning to return, parched and attempting to lye down on a hard half length bed with no pillow and one blanket. I had asked twice at half hourly intervals when my bed would be allocated and all I was told by the nurse was 'yes it's being done now' load of rubbish! Finally on the third time of getting up and going out to find someone,by which time I had totally lost my rag and was very upset, I got some sense out of someone. I have to say this was only because I was shouting and telling them how rubbish there A & E service was and was making a scene. When I did finally get up and find some nurses they were all having a chat and a cuppa. Now there's absolutely nothing wrong with that I'm not adverse to anyone having a break and I'm sure the staff work very hard but when you've been asking and asking for a bed and constantly get a curt reply 'It's being sorted out' it 's a tad upsetting when you are thirsty, in pain and desperate to get some rest. Totally un organised department. To top it all off when I had a doctor and a senior nurse around me trying to hurridly apologise for the incomptance the senior staff nurse had the cheek to say to me 'Well you were seen promptly by a doctor' Oh well then that makes the 2 hour wait without so much as a 'are you ok, do you need any more pain relief or possibly a drink ok then does it?! I finally got a bed at 2.30 in the morning! Now they have totally forgotton about my 6 week follow up app. and I can't get in for another 6 week! What a joke!!
