About: East Surrey Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

So much is said about the short comings of the East Surrey Hospital, I thought you might like to publish a copy of my letter I sent to several Visually Impaired friends:-

I arrived home from the East Surrey Hospital at about 4pm yesterday, seemingly, none the worse for wear. I went into the operating theatre at 9am and when I woke the nurse said "it's 10:15 John" I felt so well I could have walked out of the recovery room.

I stayed in for almost a week, the care and treatment was superb, I am sure the Isfield ward sister would have surpassed the qualities of Florence Nightingale. Had it not have been for my sight loss I could almost say I enjoyed my stay. I suppose it depends on what type of person you are but I got so embarrassed having to ask for help and explaining my lack of sight, almost, every time I was approached. I very quickly learnt the difference between Visually Impaired and Vision Impaired, in fact I began to think it would have been better to have "BLIND" tattooed on my forehead. (smile). It's a nuisance / problem how undetectable the condition is to sighted people but I do understand.

I was lucky to be on a ward with 4/5 guys having good senses of humour, hence I am now nicknamed "Johnny Nine Toes Mason" I think they all helped to keep me sane.

Well! yet another ordeal over - what next I ask?
