A great deal. A major failing is a disregard of the whole patient and restricted focus on the immediate cause of admission. The Trust finds it difficult to deliver effective healthcare where there are several disparate medical issues - especially where patient-centred care demands input from more than one speciality. This suggests patients are categorised by their principle illness rather than by their whole need. The focus seems to be on discharge and referral elsewhere rather than on the delivery of holistic, patient-centred care. I have confidence in the hospital's ability to treat simple, single medical conditions. The organisational issue which does not appear to be effectively addressed is: "How does the patient get appropriate and coordinated healthcare from across organisational boundaries (e.g. PCT, Acute Trust, Mental Health Trust)". Unfortunately patients don't always fit conveniently into boxes labelled "lung infection", "broken leg" or "depression".
