"Poor overnight care - the rest wonderful"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

Anything else?

My 79 yr old husband was sent to A&E in the late evening and the care there was wonderful. However, when he was wheeled into the A&E assessment unit to spend the rest of the night before further tests in the morning, he was left without a blanket, or a bell to use to call for help, with no bottle in which to urinate and no contact with staff. He was woken twice for observations, but he was disorientated and did not manage to ask for help. He was fine - and overall his hospital visit was very helpful and well-handled, but he could have needed help in the night, and he had no way to call for it, and he certainly could have done with a blanket! We don't want to make trouble for anyone, but we do hope that it may be helpful for us to pass on this information in case someone else may really need more care.

Thank you for your comments regarding your husband's recent visit to the A&E Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital. I was very sorry to hear that your husband's stay in A&E was less than satisfactory and I hope he has now made a full recovery. We would be very happy to look into the issues you have raised and provide you with a response. If you would like us to do this, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Sue McNiven, Complaint Co-ordinator on 01295 224001 or at palsjr@ouh.nhs.uk and she will be very happy to help.
