"Urology outpatients - service & attitude of..."

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

Anything else?

I have been admitted to RSCH once before for investigation that led to surgery on my neck & the care & attention by the consultant, nurses & all other workers who looked after me (& my family) were first class, Sadly my next visit has not been...... Been referred to urology due to continued pain following a suspected kidney stone & infection. Been suffering since Aug 13. Seen the specialist in Nov 13. Only a 15 min delay from scheduled appointment time which was fine, receptionist & nurse both apologised for delay but was not needed. Nurses & reception staff were excellent! Meeting my consultant, first impression he clearly wanted me out as quickly as possible & I was not wrong. My whole appointment lasted for 10 mins for my first consultation! My GP has spent longer with me. As a fit adult in their 30's who is in pain & unable to undertake all the activities they normally would including being able to work full time, this is having a massive impact on my life, not that he even listened to me when I was trying to tell him. His advise do everything but stop if it becomes very painful, what does he think I have been doing! Due to the pain & discomfort & that I am suffering I am on quite strong painkillers when in pain & unable to drive. He didn't care about symptoms or length of time I have had them. He did not ask about the medication I have been on or still taking. I had to force him to try to listen to me! He hadn't bothered looking in detail at my records & wanted blood test that had already recently been done, he grudgingly looked at my medical records & found the results & cancelled blood test! He doesn't agree with GPs diagnosis & has totally fobbed me off & made me feel like I am waiting his time & whatever it is wrong is only trivial, not to me it is not. Thankfully my GP ordered an urgent CT scan in Sept so that is one less test I have had to wait for, this & my referral letter were the only items of medical information that was visibly used during my visit. I am now waiting for further tests to try & get a diagnosis as to why I am still in pain nearly 3.5 months later (another 6-8 weeks wait & no doubt longer with Christmas in between) but will be asking to see an alternative consultant for my review. I wish I had gone to A&E when I was in agony, but didn't want to be a burden as I knew it wasn't life threatening just very painful & the pain would pass despite my partners pleas for me to go. On a positive note if whatever is causing the problems causes another bout of unbearable pain I know I will go to A&E immediately. Otherwise I know I will be seeing somebody else for any follow up appointments. I feel sorry for anybody who gets the consultant I had & hope you get better manners & service. Teat people with respect & dignity & give them the time & attention needed. I don't care if you have quota's of people to see in a day, I care about the quality service.
