I had to wait nearly 3 years for a replacement knee. As I was in my early 50s they wanted me to try all other options available first. I feel if I had been treated better in January, 2011 by the doctor in A&E it would never have escalated to a complete new knee. I was sent there that day to a Trauma clinic by my local G. P.. I was never taken to a clinic I was seen by a doctor in A&E who didn't even examine it properly or xray it. I had experienced a feeling like an elastic band snapping earlier that morning. The doctor didnt tell their his name didnt in fact speak much to me. The doctor told the nurse to put a tubigrip bandage from toe to thigh and send me home on crutches to rest. After approx. 12weeks of hobbling about in pain I returned to own G. P who then told me I had not been seen in Trauma clinic. An appointment was arranged for Ortho dept in Sept. 2011. That was first xray taken. That was my only negative part of the whole experience. From that day with pain killers physio and check ups I managed my pain till this year. As it was bone on bone it was very painful. Painkillers stopped working and I asked for surgery. 8weeks later I was admitted to ward 10 Victoria hospital to have a knee replacement. My surgeon Mr. R. Maheshwari was excellent & friendly and visited me 3 times in the 3 days I was in hospital. The staff in this ward were brilliant too. From cleaners to porters to nursing staff they were all excellent.
I should really mention physios too(but they caused much pain. hahahha) They were all brilliant kind and very understanding in first few days when you have a large wound and cant move about much.
It is week 7 now and I have had 6 week check up and I am great. Physio have said im doing great and will get regular check ups.
I cant thank them enough as I was petrified on the day I went in at 8am for my operation. By 2 30pm it was all over.
