"Treatment for my kidney stone - Nov 14th to 16th"

About: Heartlands Hospital

Anything else?

I was transferred to Heartlands from Good Hope after being diagnosed with a kidney stone in A & E. I was told that there were no beds available prior to going, so was not surprised at the three hours in the waiting room after I arrived. I was given water and a cup of tea during the wait. Upon arrival at Ward 11 at approx 19:30hrs I was seen and examined again by a junior doctor who reiterated what I had been told at Good Hope and went into more detail about the proposed surgery. I was told that I would stay in hospital until I had the surgery, which would be within the next two days, depending upon emergency admissions. I was made comfortable for the (Thursday) night with pain killers. Early next morning, I was examined by a consultant and the proposed operation was explained to me in detail. I was told not to eat or drink and be prepared for surgery later that day. On the evening I was visited twice by members of the surgical team who told me that they would do their best to operate that evening. At approx 20:30 I was moved to Ward 10 and shortly afterwards taken to theater. The theater staff were really good. The anaesthetist was amazing, I did not think that anyone could be so passionate about their job especially at ten o' clock on a Friday night. He really put me at ease. I had a stent fitted to by pass the stone. After returning to Ward 10 I was looked after well and visited by a consultant the next morning. He gave me an update and explained the ongoing treatment. I was discharged later that day (Sat). My other lasting memories of my stay are that most staff never had a minute to spare and the quality of the food was first class. I did hear one or two people complain that the meals were not big enough, but in my opinion, they were more than adequate, I do not think that you should over eat whilst you are ill and in any case quality is better than quantity. I have no complaints at all about my stay or treatment.
