"assessment for psychotherapy"

About: CAMHS Team St Helens / St Helens CAMHS

(as the patient),

I am a woman of 64 who has a longstanding history of trauma and resulting depression, but am also myself a trained health professional with an understanding of my problems. I asked to be referred in order to ascertain the possibility of obtaining psychotherapy within the NHS as we can no longer afford to continue paying for my private therapy.

This is a really helpful response, in that I have been able to talk briefly through my situation and feel it has been understood. I have now been offered a one hour assessment which I feel will be a helpful process. Many thanks.

Unfortunately the assessment was not at all helpful. I was not asked whether I minded a student sitting in (informed consent) although in the event I was glad as I felt she understood me more than the assessor who used closed questions and jumped to conclusions which I then had to correct.

The experience was frustrating and irritating and I did not feel understood. The assessor seemed not to know of previous contact and was going to refer me back to the service I had already come from and to cap it all then he referred me to a recovery team for the wrong area to where I live.

Eventually after I telephoned that was sorted out and I have since had an extremely helpful assessment with the St Helens recovery team.

Well I have subsequently had a further assessment but the recovery team are unable to offer me any support.

They suggest further therapy would be a negative step and that I need to integrate into the community - which I already knew and was hoping to get support to do...
