"Delay in treating bleeding on brain"

About: North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Salford Royal / Neurosurgery Tameside General Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a staff member),

This story has been posted by Healthwatch Tameside on behalf of a member of the public who asked not to have their name published. They said…

3 weeks after gallstone surgery, lady suffered a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage (bleed into the brain). Had severe headache and copious and continuous vomiting. Seen at Tameside Hospital in A & E, but delay in treating her due to no bed available at Salford Royal where she was to be transferred. After many hours in A & E Tameside, a transfer by ambulance was arranged. On the arrival of the ambulance (containing a patient being admitted to Tameside as a 'bed exchange' with this lady), the crew said their shift had ended and they weren't allowed to transfer her to Salford, though eventually this took place. This caused more delay, and was extremely distressing to the lady and her anxious family.
