"Visited out-patients for a follow ..."

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

(as the patient),

What I liked

Visited out-patients for a follow up appointment and was met by a doctor who had never seen me before. Not once did he ask how I had been since my last appt some 9 months earlier, had my condition improved, deteriorated, did I have any concerns, questions etc. He simply said he would organise a scan and would refer me to another dept. When asked about a follow up appointment to discuss my scan results and onward referral I was simply told "you don't need a follow up appointment"!!!!!!!

How pray was I going to know the results of my scan and how was I going to make sure that I would be referred to a specialist of my choice at my local hospital.

I am a nurse having trained at the old Walsgrave Hospital and I was always taught to listen and look at the patient themselves as well as reading their notes, results etc.

Listening to a patient seems an old fashioned thing to do now !

What could be improved

Make sure the doctors LISTEN carefully to the patient themselves as to what they are saying and not just judge a patient on scan results, blood tests etc.

Close the jewellery shop and clothes shop it makes reception look like a departure lounge at an airport !
