I had to call the 111 service as my daughter was in chronic pain in her back and leg. The service were fantastic and sent out an ambulance. The ambulance team were fantastic and dealt with my daughter very well. They told us she would have to go to hospital as they were concerned about the pain and numbness in her leg caused by the back pain.
At the A&E department of the Norfolk and Norwich University hospital she was assessed and given morphine. When the doctor saw her I was concerned that in my mind she was not assessed properly and even after a very detailed description of what had happened to cause the pain I was told that there wasn't anything they could do and that I would have to wait for a referral to a Paediatric spine doctor and an MRI scan. We were sent home.
I took her to see our GP on the Monday after the incident to be told they would try and get an appointment for an MRI booked asap. I then returned to the GP on the Tuesday to be told by another doctor that it looked like she had popped a disc and that they would try and speed the appointment through. This wasn't done so I had to phone the MRI department myself. I was told the next available appointment for her was in two weeks. Meanwhile she was unable to go to school and was taking 3 types of pain medication.
I am disgusted that I had to chase different departments for answers when she was left in pain. I strongly believe that in my opinion had she been properly diagnosed at the A&E department in the first place then things would have moved quicker.
I am still unsure as to what is exactly wrong with her. I am shocked that collectively it has not been possible to diagnose or move forward treatment for a 10 year old child. Even my own GP was shocked to hear that they didn't call a Paediatric doctor to see her at A&E. I will be making a formal complaint about my daughter's treatment.
