"Last hours of life on AAU"

About: Frenchay Hospital

Anything else?

Myself and my family feel very upset about the way my 82 year mother was treated in her last hours of her life. She was admitted on to the AAU ward at around 5a.m. It seemed she was the only person on that ward that was gravely ill. We were told by the consultant that she had Pulmonary embolisms and that the next 24 hours would be crucial. We feel at that stage she should have been put in a side room or somewhere other than being surrounded by all the other patients, sat around chatting about the weather and what their lunch was like, whilst my mum was hooked up to a machine with tubes in her arms and struggling to breath. The medical staff did all they could for her, but sadly she passed away a few hours later on that ward with the curtains around her. I feel it must have been very upsetting for the other patients as it was for all of us.

Dear Anonymous - thank you for taking the time and trouble to post an account of your family’s experience of the AAU. Please accept my sincere condolences on the sad loss of your mother. I am sorry to take so long responding, but I have been out of the office for the last fortnight. I regret that your mother’s passing could not be arranged to give her the privacy we would wish to provide for all our patients. Regrettably the scope for provision of private rooms is very limited at present, but this will be addressed when the new Brunel Building is opened next May. I have shared your comments with the AAU Management Team so they are aware of your views and comments. Kind regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
