"some good, some bad nursing"

About: The Great Western Hospital

Anything else?

I had a sub total hysterectomy with some complications. Pre-op the anesthetist was fantastic, and the staff good. Post-op I was in a lot of pain which wasn't managed, I was very scared and felt very vulnerable. One nurse tried to get me out of bed the following day, I was in agony and collapsed. She seemed to think that I should have been able to get up, which made me feel awful. I saw the consultant that day and he explained to me that the operation had been technically difficult and he had punctured my bladder. He said it would take time for me to recover as I had had so much work done. I don't know why this information was not passed onto the nursing staff or indeed why did they not read my notes to understand my physical condition. I was sent home 4 days after the operation on a Friday with a catheter to return on the Monday to have it removed, I felt very poorly. On returning I collapsed in the toilet and my husband asked the nurse for a bed nothing was done, there was no response from the nurse, I was in agony and very distressed so in the end he gave me morphine put me in a wheelchair and took me home. The nursing is very mixed on the ward, there are a couple of brilliant nurses who actually care and others who I feel really shouldn't be in nursing Iwouldn't want to be so unwell and in their care again.
