I had an abominable hysterectomy but some of the staff nurses kept asking me if I had a wound,do they not check patient's notes? The night staff were talking very loud all night arranging their Christmas outing with no regard to the fact that patients need to sleep. The food was appalling. There was dirt and fluff round the locker wheels which had never been moved for cleaning. After surgery I was given a 1litre jug of water which I could not lift or pour out and no one helped. The nurse who took my blood on Sunday morning used a vein on the back of my hand which has caused a very large blood leak and destroyed the vein,having previously had a mastectomy I have to be careful because I only have the left arm for any surgical procedures. There was a real lack of care and consideration for the patient . I also did not like having men in the next bay,using same toilet and bathroom single sex wards especially after surgery are much better.

We would like to thank you for your comments and are really sorry that these aspects of your experience were not satisfactory. We agree with you that it's not acceptable for staff to talk loudly and disturb patients during the night, so please accept our apologies. It's really important patients are able to get as much rest as possible and the Ward Manager has shared your experience with the ward team and asked them to be very aware of the need to keep noise to an absolute minimum at night. We are sorry you struggled with your water jug – staff would have gladly assisted with this, had they been aware, but it is something we will take into consideration for the future because we appreciate that it can be difficult for patients to lift things after surgery. The bedside lockers are moved daily when the ward is swept and the wheels are checked at this time; following your observation, we went and rechecked the locker wheels and they are free from dirt which suggests appropriate cleaning of the locker is now occurring but we are really sorry if that wasn't your experience. When taking blood samples there are occasions when slight bleeding or bruising does occur and we acknowledge that this may have been distressing for you, so please accept our apologies for that. You also mentioned that you didn't like having male patients in the next bay. Our bed bays are single-sex and there are separate toilet and bathroom facilities for male and female patients on a ward. This is in line with the national guidance on ensuring patients are cared for in single-sex accommodation. We are really sorry if the female toilet and bathroom weren't pointed out to you clearly while you were on the ward. Ladies and gentlemen are nursed in separate single-sex bays and separate toilet and bathroom facilities are always allocated. Once again, thank you for your comments. We would like to add that the ward team welcome patient feedback and would always encourage patients to raise any concerns and comments at the time of their stay so that staff can address any issues as soon as possible. The team - and all of us in the Trust - want to provide patients with the very best clinical care and hospital experience we can.
