My partner was admitted to the City Hospital last year for an orthopaedic procedure. The consultant was rude and arrogant, and gave conflicting information at different appointments. For example, he told her she would not be able to walk for 2-3 months, and then in a subsequent appointment when she mentioned this he said this was rubbish and demanded to know who had told her this. When she told him that he had said this, he denied this and treated her like a complete idiot.
Immediately after the operation my partner complained about burning pain on her leg. The nurses dismissed this and said it would disappear in a few hours, and then her consultant said it would disappear in a few weeks.
A year later, she is still left with this problem that her GP has said is due to nerve damage. She has also found out that this is a common side effect of the treatment she had. At no time did the consultant or anyone else point out this possible common side effect. If she had known, she would not have gone ahead with this operation. The only side effect mentioned was that the operation could fail or that there was a high risk of infection.
She needs further orthopaedic care and has asked her GP to refer her anywhere except to that consultant.
I am always amazed as well that during the night nurses laugh and chatter loudly as if it was daytime. I have experienced this in Queens as well as the City. This makes it extremely difficult for patients to sleep. But unfortunately seems to be common practice.
