"My midwife, instead of being supportive was awful"

About: North Middlesex Hospital / Accident and emergency North Middlesex Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Absolutely horrible experience at North Middlesex.

Went in with an abruption via ambulance. Had very high blood pressure and was shaking from the shock of the abruption.

My midwife, instead of being support was awful. Dismissed the Tens machine I had saying 'they don't work'. When I questioned if gas and air would make me sick she said 'probably' and took the canister away. Finally when I asked for the epidural, the midwife said as calm as anything 'it's too late'!

Why did the midwife not inform me when I could have it? There was no communication at all with me AT ALL!

When I said I wanted to give birth in a squatting position the midwife said 'had a bad back' and put my legs in stirrups! ! It's was an awful awful experience.

Am pregnant with baby no3 and petrified of going through that again. Unfortunately chase farm maternity shut so no other option but North Mid.

Oh yes forgot to mention after the baby midwife went on a tea break leaving us in the room, didnt explain if I could wash etc as I'd had stitches. Had to send my husband to fetch someone!

Just a terrible experience all round.I feel Midwife's really need to be given training how to treat patients.

I'm very sorry to hear about your experience. Please email me (f.laird@nhs.net) with a contact number so I can learn more from you about it. I'm head of midwifery and I want all mums to have a great experience of childbirth here. Most do – 94% of our mums recommend us to their family and friends - but sometimes things don't go as well and if not, it's important for us to learn from it and make it better. So thanks very much and look forward to hearing from you. Fiona Laird.
