About: King's Mill Hospital / Accident and emergency King's Mill Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

My father came into A&E in a very bad way; bleeding and in pain. He was taken through A&E onto SAU/Ward 21 where the staff and the care were outstanding. He then transferred beds on the same ward and what a change. The nurse could not have been ruder; he had his dinner then we were told 'nil by mouth' as he would be going to theatre in the morning. First thing in the morning he rang to say they are sending me home can you come and get me. The nurse would not discuss anything with me at all. He was told a district nurse would be out every day to see to him and it was three days before they came out.

At this point he had an infection (which is not what he came in for but what he went out with). We were told he needs an urgent operation and dad rang the consultants secretary to ask when this would be and was told he was not even on her system. She then said urgent is 4-6 weeks. That was almost four weeks ago and we have heard nothing. In those four weeks he has had emergency doctors out and been re-admitted three times via emergency department.

The hospital is still not treating his original condition and are barely treating the infection that he got while in there. The doctors and nurses will not discuss anything with us. My father, who is in his 70's, has been left an emotional wreck by the apparent absolute lack of care by this hospital. My mother who is also in her 70s has had to care for him due to the lack of care co-ordination from the hospital and she is now on beta blockers.

Whilst in hospital my mother received a call from the Urology department (who he is under) and asked to speak to him at home. The whole situation is absolutely disgusting. My father does not want to go back there again but he is in dire need of this operation. (We still have no details of what is actually wrong with him).

This is a very potted history of the issues but to say the least this feels like neglect and I am absolutely disgusted and appalled at the way my father and us his family have been treated. The place may have had millions of pounds spent on looking good but I would rather my father was treated in a shed but given the operation and the care he needs than this. How you can repeatedly send home a man in his 70's to be cared for by his elderly wife is beyond my comprehension. No structured care plan, nothing.

Last week he was told he would be sent an outpatient appointment to check his progress. This has not happened. He was told yesterday in A&E that the tablets he was taking were not suitable for his illness but they were issued by Kings Mill two days before. This seems like third world care, not the care you would expect from a multi million pound hospital. My father has had a similar problem before and was treated in the City Hospital. When he told this to the consultant he was told 'why didn't you go back there then'. Yes really. The fact that he no longer lives near the City Hospital, the City does not have an A&E and Kings Mill is ten minutes from his house might explain why the ambulance bought him there.

There are two words that should apply to healthcare. Trust and Care. We have neither.
