"Unnecessary worry"

About: Grantham & District Hospital

Anything else?

Visited the A & E department on Sunday 10th November 2013 having smashed my knee on a metal table at work. After waiting three hours i had it x rayed. Was told by a doctor there was something on the X-Ray that looked like a fracture or a chip or loose bone. Was given crutches and a knee splint. There was some debate with the doctor and the nurse about which splint to wear and how to put it on. It was never made clear if I should be trying to bend my knee or keep it straight. Was discharged, went back to work and came back to Grantham to visit the fracture clinic. The consultant told me there was absolutely nothing wrong with my X-Ray and having examining me told me I needed surgery. I asked whether it would be key hole and he said they would open it up and reattach the tendons. He told me it would happen tomorrow morning! As you can imagine I was in a bit of a state having gone in with a chipped bone thinking I would need a cast to what they called 'trauma surgery' and six weeks in a full leg cast?! I went to have an MRI and pre surgery prep with all the docs regarding possibility of blood clots etc and not being allowed to eat past midnight. After a lot of reorgansing the little one with school trips we came back the following day having not eaten and went through Theatre prep with all the form signing. They had me down as 'Barbara' on the documentation and said the desk clerk must have been tired the night before when doing the paperwork! God only knows what 'Barbara' has had done to her if she had my paperwork in her folder? They were trying to get me to sign other consent forms and give me pain killers which I refused as I still didn't know for sure what they planned on doing with me and had not discussed the results of my MRI. The consultant came in and told me my MRI was fine and to go home and take off the splint and walk on it. This was of course a massive relief but having left on reflection I am extremely angry about the unnecessary stress Grantham put me and my family under. We missed work and were not paid, children were passed on to carers and family were on stand by to drive up while i was in theatre. I am not a doctor but for me I had three separate diagnoses in 4 days by three different specialists and they should have sent me home and phoned me up with MRI results without putting me through surgery that wasnt needed. I still have a lot of pain in my knee and think I have a chipped bone. I am off to Peterborough where I hope to get a proper diagnosis. Grantham have nice staff but organisation is a joke

I can fully appreciate your worry and your anger; whilst there are situations where an initial diagnosis may subsequently be revised by a specialist I am a little concerned about you describing 3 different diagnosis in 4 days and almost having surgery.

Could you possibly contact me directly at: jennie.negus@ulh.nhs.uk with some personal details so that I can look into this further? I am sorry about the worry and stress this has clearly caused you but would also like to thank you for leaving your feedback; it is very valuable to us.
