"Acute assessment Unit"

About: Lister Hospital

Anything else?

I wasn,t actually a patient but a regular visitor to a dear friend who had to endure a stay in this unit of nearly two weeks because i don,t think they really knew what to do with him. I cannot point the finger at one particular thing nor any individual or staff group but his overall experience was dire. I think in part it is the way the ward is set out. It is far too small for the number of patients. I think patients who are that sick need some space from other patients and some comforts. The whole experience would send anyone into a very gloomy state of mind. Speaking of which i think they deal with the body only really and do not consider the overall person or mental well being. That is why i think it should score low on dignity and respect. We saw some awfull things in there. It doesn,t have to be like that.

Response from Lister Hospital

Thanks for your feedback and we're sorry that your friend's stay on the Lister's acute assessment unit was not as you would have wished. Actually we are well aware of the limitations of the current, very busy, facility, which is not the fault of the staff looking after patients. This is why we 're building, right now, a brand new £20 million ward block at the Lister, part of which will be used to house a brand new acute assessment unit. This has been designed with input from our doctors and nurses, so we're sure that it will be so much better than the current unit. Whilst that is good news for the future (it should be open by this time next year), that does not mean we should not seek to make the current facility as good as it can be in the meantime. We would encourage you, therefore, to consider asking your friend if he would like to raise any concerns with us - either directly or via yourself if you were happy to do that. Just contact generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net and we'll be only too willing to guide you through the process.
