About: Hull Royal Infirmary

Anything else?

Disgusting treatment and no respect. I was admitted in severe pain, ignored for hours, talked to rudely and moved around without explanation. My name and personal information was spelt wrong on all charts, despite me clearly spelling it out to each doctor and nurse that asked. I was banned from food or liquids for more than 36hrs as they didn't know when they'd be able to "fit me in" for surgery, and despite IV fluids being "ordered" for me, I didn't receive any for my entire 3 day stay, leaving me dehydrated and weak. It was pointless asking for help from the nurses as they just made excuses and returned to sit around in their hallway gossiping with one another. Following my exploratory surgery I was ignored and not informed of how it had gone. I had to struggle out of bed on my own to find my chart to read so I could find out what was going on. Turns out they'd removed my appendix, fine, but it would have been nice to be told. The food was sparse, bland and un-nutritious. The cutlery was dirty when it arrived for each meal, with hard pieces of food stuck to it, so I had to take it to the bathroom to clean it before I could eat my meals. I wasn't asked how I felt when the day came to be discharged, nor was I given any after care advice or clean dressings. My incisions weren't checked once by the nurses. I was rushed to sign document after document and not allowed to read any of them, told to "just sign it and not waste [the nurses] time". I found my entire stay there traumatic and unacceptable. But the treatment I saw of other patients around me was far worse than my own. I saw a terrified old woman screamed at to stop crying, a Muslim woman refused the right to be examined by a female doctor and another elderly lady ignored for more than 6 hours as she screamed in pain, keeping the entire ward awake and distressed all night. This hospital really needs to sort its staff out, especially the nurses. I hope I never have to step foot into this disgrace for a medical facility ever again. It truly makes me sick!
